Sisters

I recently read an article from an Australian online magazine that claims having a sister makes you a better person. Does it?
I have two of them, Big Sis and Little Sis. Growing up, we had our fair share of scrapes, disagreements, squabbles, etc. As adults, we’ve shared meals, stories, tears, laughter, and mutual beefs. However, at the end of the day, I knew I could count on my sisters no matter what. That still holds true today.
As teenagers, Big Sis was one of the most unselfish people I knew. At sixteen, she landed her first job, a grueling fast-food affair. When she got paid, she would use her paychecks so we could go shopping and out to eat. I didn’t have a job, nor did I have money, but Big Sis unselfishly shared what she had. Sadly, I wasn’t as generous when I got my first job, two years later.
When Little Sis turned forty, Big Sis and I treated her to a surprise cruise. We told Little Sis what days to take off from work, what to pack, what documents she needed, and when to be ready to leave. Little Sis never asked any questions. She trusted us fully.
That says a lot, and it’s indicative of the type of relationship we have. I trust my sisters, and I know they trust me.
The article I read also states that having a sister improves mental health and boosts self-esteem. Let me tell you, nobody, and I mean nobody, can build you up or cut you down like a sister! So, the self-esteem benefit should be taken with a big grain of salt. But I have to say, very few people gas me up like my sisters, and a compliment from them is like receiving a blessing from the Pope.
So, am I a better person for having sisters? Absolutely. I love them and cannot imagine doing life without those two crazy chicks by my side and all up in my business. And yes, they are crazy, but in a good way. I’m sure our one and only brother would agree.
So, here’s to sisters. If you haven’t spoken to yours in a while, you know what to do!
