Light

Dear God,

I’m struggling, but You already know. We seem to talk about this a lot.

Your creation is spiraling out of control at a dizzying speed. Greed, hatred, hypocrisy, evil, and ugliness are becoming more commonplace, easily overshadowing love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. And the sad part? It’s coming from those who claim to love You.

You’ve seen the shiny crosses, patriotic symbols, bumper stickers and t-shirts. You hear the claims of what’s righteous and holy, all while spewing what could never be mistaken for love. Love thy neighbor only applies to the neighbor who agrees with or looks like us. We forget that we’re made in Your image, an image that our tiny minds can’t fully comprehend. If we could, we’d be more compassionate and see the beauty inside of those You created, regardless of what adorns the outside, their circumstances, or even how they choose to recognize You…or not.

It’s incomprehensible to think that we’ve placed You in such a tiny box and call You by one name as if You’re not vast enough to be infinitely more than that and many things to many people. Unfortunately, Your words have been twisted and manipulated to serve those who are really serving themselves.

These are indeed troubling times, but I’m sure You’ve seen worse. After all, You’ve always been and You know Your creation, intimately. Still, I’m sure You’re sad and even disappointed. I am.

My only consolation? Darkness cannot survive where there’s light. I have to remind myself of that more and more. It’s a small consolation, but I’ll take it.

Thank you for listening, God. We’ll talk soon…
