Happy Anniversary
They began dating in the eighth grade. To my knowledge, Sarah was the first girl my son, Brantley, was serious about. Over the next several years they continued to date. Sarah became a fixture in our lives and Brantley was a fixture in her family’s life. Sometimes I thought they spent too much time together, but what did I know?
The relationship continued through high school and not too much to my surprise, through college. Did I mention that they went to the same college?
It was during their third year of college that Brantley came to me and said he wanted to marry Sarah. I knew this was coming but not this soon. They each only had about a year or so to finish school. Then Brantley dropped his second piece of news. He was not going to finish college. He was in love.
Brantley has always been determined and is good about making plans and sticking to them. He planned to marry Sarah and be the best husband he could be. In his eyes, it was that simple. While I respected that, I tried to explain the benefits of waiting. Waiting until they both finished college. Waiting until they were older. Waiting until they were more established. But to a determined twenty-one-year-old man who was in love with the girl he started dating at thirteen, his mind was made up.
Well, this October marks Brantley and Sarah’s fifteenth wedding anniversary. I have seen my son grow in ways I never imagined. A homeowner, hardworking blue-collar guy, uncle, loving husband, and a good man, he clearly never took his mind off his plan or Sarah.
I don’t know what the next fifteen, or even the next fifty years, hold for Brantley and Sarah. But if the last fifteen years are any indication, those years will be filled with love, laughter, good food, friends, and family.
Happy anniversary, Brantley and Sarah!
